The MLA has joined a coalition of thirty organizations petitioning Congress to increase funding for Title VI and Fulbright-Hays, vital federal programs that fund international and foreign language education. In response to a budget proposal that would slash these programs by $4.89 million (6.8% below 2016 levels), the coalition is proposing that the House and Senate Appropriations Committees increase funding by $6.5 million for 2017. These essential programs enable students to master foreign languages and pursue international and area studies and have consequences for the national security and global economic competitiveness of the United States.
